Combining Ability for Resistance to White Mold in a Diallel Cross of Soybean BABT
Pereira,Fernanda Aparecida Castro; Vello,Natal Antonio; Rocha,Gabriela Antônia de Freitas; Nekatschalow,Marcos Custódio.
Abstract The white mold, caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (Lib.) de Bary, is one of the most important diseases of soybean. The objective of the present work was to evaluate the soybean reaction to the fungus S. sclerotiorum, which causes white mold, in a partial diallel with 50 crosses. The Group I of parents was composed of ten experimental lines with high grain yield and the group II consisted in five genotypes with possible resistance to white mold. Ten plants of each cross in the F4 generation and the parents were evaluated for reaction to fungus infection using the method of inoculation in detached leaves in order to assess the severity of the disease and to later estimate the combining abilities. Estimates of the specific combining ability (SCA)...

Combining ability in sweet pepper for resistance to powdery mildew Horticultura Brasileira
Marchesan,Cristina B; Melo,Arlete MT de; Paterniani,Maria Elisa AGZ.
With the increase of the production of pepper in protected environment, pathogens began to cause serious damages to producers such as Leveillula taurica (Lév.) Arn., fungus that causes powdery mildew. The systemic fungicides have not shown very satisfactory results. Thus, considering that protected cropping of pepper in Brazil is significant and growing, the incorporation of genes that confer resistance to powdery mildew is important for the maintenance of this cropping system. In this research, carried out in 2007 in Campinas, São Paulo State, Brazil, the agronomic performance and resistance to powdery mildew was determined by triple hybrids of sweet pepper through general and specific combining ability of their parents. For agronomic performance of the...

Combining ability of maize grain yield under different levels of environmental stress PAB
Souza,Leandro Vagno de; Miranda,Glauco Vieira; Galvão,João Carlos Cardoso; Guimarães,Lauro José Moreira; Santos,Izabel Cristina dos.
The objectives of this work were to caracterize the tropical maize germplasm and to compare the combining abilities of maize grain yield under different levels of environmental stress. A diallel was performed among tropical maize cultivars with wide adaptability, whose hybrid combinations were evaluated in two sowing dates, in two years. The significance of the environmental effect emphasized the environmental contrasts. Based on grain yield, the environments were classified as favorable (8,331 kg ha-1), low stress (6,637 kg ha-1), high stress (5,495 kg ha-1), and intense stress (2,443 kg ha-1). None of the genetic effects were significant in favorable and intense stress environments, indicating that there was low germplasm variability under these...

Combining ability of tropical maize cultivars in organic and conventional production systems Ciência Rural
Oliveira,Lucimar Rodrigues de; Miranda,Glauco Vieira; DeLima,Rodrigo Oliveira; Souza,Leandro Vagno de; Galvão,João Carlos Cardoso; Santos,Izabel Cristina dos.
The objectives were to identify maize germplasm for the organic productions system and to compare the genetic effects of the grain yield of maize cultivars in organic and conventional production systems. Diallel crosses were made between six maize cultivars and the hybrid combinations were evaluated in conventional and organic production systems. The hybrid combinations produced different grain yields in the two production systems. The interaction between general combining ability and production systems was significant for grain yield, ear height and number of ears. This indicates that the additive genetic effects differ in organic and conventional production systems. The specific combining abilities (SCA) were significant for grain yield and plant height,...

Common bunt resistant wheat composite cross populations Organic Eprints
Steffan, Philipp; Borgen, Anders; Backes, Gunter; Rasmussen, Søren K..
Utilising diverse populations instead of single line varieties is expected to lead to a number of advantages in cereal production. These include reduced epidemics of plant diseases, improved weed competition and better exploitation of soil nutrients, resulting in improved yield stability. However, a number of challenges must be met before diverse wheat populations can be introduced into commercial wheat production: one of these is the development of breeding technologies based on mass selection which enable breeders and farmers to improve specific traits in populations and maintain diversity at the same time. BIOBREED is a project started in Denmark in 2011 to meet these challenges for wheat population breeding. The project is focusing on the development...

Comparison of interconnections between barley breeding material traits under organic and conventional growing conditions Organic Eprints
Legzdina, L.; Kokare, A.; Beinarovica, I.; Lammerts van Bueren, Edith T..
While breeding for organic farming it is necessary to identify the most appropriate growing conditions in which to perform the selection process. Soil fertility, crop management, yield level and other factors may vary very much between each organic farm, and between organic farms and research institutions where the selection is usually performed. Since plant breeding requires considerable input of resources and the market for organic varieties is limited, it is essential to find the most appropriate selection conditions that will provide acceptable varieties for organic farms. Spring barley breeding lines selected from two cross combinations (Primus/Idumeja and Anni/Dziugiai) at two distinctive organic and two conventional locations were used in the...

Competitive oats for integrated weed management and organic rotations Organic Eprints
Fradgley, Nick.
Using a competitive crop like oats is essential for integrated management of weed problems. Oats can compete well with weeds through efficient nutrient uptake, allelopathy and canopy cover shading. Weeds are suppressed by the crops tillering ability and varieties with good canopy cover. Some varieties can tolerate weeds better by having both good canopy cover and height.

Concepts and Strategies of Organic Plant Breeding in Light of Novel Breeding Techniques Organic Eprints
Nuijten, Edwin; Messmer, Monika M.; Lammerts van Bueren, Edith T..
In this paper, we describe the development of a set of guiding principles for the evaluation of breeding techniques by the organic sector over time. The worldwide standards of organic agriculture (OA) do not allow genetic engineering (GE) or any products derived from genetic engineering. The standards in OA are an expression of the underlying principles of health, ecology, fairness and care. The derived norms are process and not product oriented. As breeding is considered part of the process in agriculture, GE is not a neutral tool for the organic sector. The incompatibility between OA and GE is analyzed, including the “novel breeding techniques”. Instead, alternative breeding approaches are pursued based on the norms and values of organic agriculture not...

Consumer Reaction to the «Flavour Group Concept» to introduce Scab Resistant Apple Varieties into the Market. «Variety-Teams» as a Further Development of the Concept Organic Eprints
Weibel, Franco; Leder, Alfred.
A tool to ease the market introduction of scab resistant apple varieties in supermarkets, is the so-called «Flavour Group Concept (FGC; Weibel and Grab, 2000) that has been developed by FiBL and «Coop» (second biggest supermarket retailer of Switzerland) already in 1995. The FGC is providing to the buyers additional information on the specific flavour direction of that "unknown" apple cultivar in front of them (mild to sweet; spicy-tart; predominantly tart). In 2002 a consumer behaviour study was undertaken by «IHA/GfK-Switzerland» Institute to evaluate the consumer response to the FGC. The results reveal that 36 % of the persons interviewed at the point of sale considered additional information on the flavour direction of the apple cultivars as...

Contribution à l'étude de la crevette rose Palaemon serratus (Pennant) : Exploitation, Biologie, Elevage, Epidémiologie ArchiMer
Campillo, Albert.
This these is the result of several years of investigations conducted on the common prawn Palaemon serratus in the Roscoff (northern Brittany) and Yeu (bay of Biscay) sectors of the French Atlantic coast. Following a description of the fishery and fishing strategies, it deals with the species biological aspects, focusing on growth, lifespan, sex-ratio and breeding. Hypotheses on the reasons for apparent variations in interannual abundance are drawn up and compared with field observations. The second part is devoted to production experiments in a controlled environment (hatchery), explaining how larvae are obtained and their development and survival with respect to food, density and physical parameters like salinity and temperature. The link between...

Contribution to organic breeding programmes of wheat variety testing in organic farming in France Organic Eprints
Fontaine, Laurence; Rolland, Bernard; Bernicot, Marie-Hélène.
Bread winter wheat is one of the most important cash crops for French organic farmers. Nevertheless, most of varieties available on the market were bred for conventional farming systems (with high inputs of mineral fertilizers and chemicals for crop defense). In order to obtain correct levels of yield and quality, it is important i) to screen current varieties to find the best suited for organic conditions, and ii) to rapidly obtain suitable varieties that are specifically bred for organic farming conditions. Bread wheat variety trials under organic conditions have been coordinated since the year 2001, to centralize and evaluate results at national level. The ringtest not only aims to compare varieties, but also to support organic breeding, as it provides...

Cooperatives' Role in the Artificial Insemination Industry AgEcon
Hogeland, Julie A..
The artificial insemination industry provides breeding products and services for both dairy and beef cattle. Two-thirds of the industry is organized as producer-owned cooperatives. The industry has been so highly successful in meeting the needs of producers for a high-quality reliable product that the United States is the world's leading producer and exporter of bull semen. Yet, more bulls (and consequently more cooperatives) are available than are technically needed for genetic variation and breeding requirements. The result of such product proliferation is higher semen prices and excessive costs for inventory, distribution, and marketing. To maintain their prominent role in the industry, the 22 cooperatives need to consolidate to streamline the...

Bouget, Jean-francois; Mazurie, Joseph.
This study presents the main results of oyster growth obtained experimentally in 2002 and 2003, in the farming area of Cancale before the leases reorganization of 2004. According to the REMORA monitoring network from 1990 to 2004, the oyster growth in Cancale bay may be characterized by an average annual weight gain (around 30g per year), a rather weak meat content compared to other regional oyster sites, and an exceptional quality of shell (absence of blisters, few Poly do rd). Spatially, the oyster farming area of Cancale shows rather homogeneous performances of breeding, in spite of the muddy southern area. In addition an experimental trial in 2003 allowed to evaluate favourably the potential of the new oyster area of Saint-Benoît : in these...

Crop traits relevant for selecting potato genotypes adapted to low nitrogen availability Organic Eprints
Tiemens-Hulscher, Marjolein; Lammerts van Bueren, E.T.; Struik, Paul.
Canopy cover development was measured for 6 to 18 different potato varieties, under 3 different nitrogen regimes. This canopy cover development can be expressed in several paramaters. Of these parameters, the 'Area Under Cover Progress Curve' and the 'percentage of maximal ground cover' show the highest correlation with the final yield in low-nitogen conditions.
